Grants are awards of money given to charitable organizations, individuals, facilities, or businesses in an effort to keep those groups or persons’ activities going. Before any money can be given away, though, grant proposals are written by those groups, individuals, or facilities that are in need of the grant funding. Grant proposals are detailed statements about why the organization or individual needs the funding, what they will utilize the funding for if they receive it, and other details about their financial situation.

In order to ensure their money is going to be used as effectively as possible, grantmakers usually set up a rigorous set of guidelines that the grant proposals must comply with—this effectively weeds out the grant proposals which were not taken seriously enough by their writers. These guidelines often take hours to learn and comply with and generally serve to make a grant writer’s job harder, whether he is experienced or an amateur.
